What is June Dairy Month?

June Dairy Month is a nationwide celebration that recognizes the contributions of dairy farmers and highlights the importance of dairy in our daily lives.
Kentucky dairy farmers are at the heart of local agriculture and community life.

Why It Matters in Kentucky

In Kentucky, dairy farming plays a vital role in supporting farm families, strengthening rural communities, and contributing to the state’s agricultural economy. Dairy producers work year-round to provide high-quality milk and dairy products while maintaining a strong commitment to animal care, land stewardship, and sustainability.

What You'll Find Here

Throughout June Dairy Month, the Kentucky Dairy Development Council has partnered with KYProud and the University of Kentucky MarketReady division to highlight local value-added dairy producers from across the state. These profiles provide a closer look at the people behind Kentucky dairy and the impact they have in their communities. We look forward to expanding this beyond value-added producers in the near future.

Chaney's Dairy Barn

Chaney's Dairy Barn has been on the same Kentucky land since the late 1800s, with the family milking Jersey cows since the 1940s. Facing stagnant milk prices around 2000, they pivoted to agritourism and on-farm processing. Today they bottle non standardized whole milk, naturally higher in butterfat than conventional, alongside chocolate milk, half and half, seasonal flavors, and house made ice cream. Products are distributed through Creation Gardens into markets across Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Nashville, and are carried in Houchens and Kroger locations throughout the region.

On Tapp Dairy

On Tapp Dairy has operated on the same Washington County, Kentucky land since 1964, and is one of only three remaining dairy farms in the county. After transitioning away from conventional dairying, they shifted to 100% grass fed milk production using rotational grazing and three-way rotational crossbreeding to develop cows suited for grass-based systems. They bottle whole milk and are working toward producing butter and ice cream as they bring new equipment online. Products can be found at various farmers markets, including the Bear Creek Christian Church market, which runs from the first Saturday after Derby through mid-October.
